I guess it depends on the mbuf size, doesn't it?
I'm not against having a default value, but we need to understand the
rationale by just reading the code and not having to ask the author.

I think it proves the async feature is not usable as it is implemented
today.
Expecting the user to know he has to select or change at runtime the tx
completion mode for the feature to just work (not only a performance
tuning) is not acceptable IMHO.
To summarize:
- By default, Tx completion are done by the Rx path so txonly mode is
not working (and nothing will notify the user).
- If user switch to Tx completion are done by the Tx path, last packet
will never be completed.
It may work for benchmark, but it is not usable in real-life.
I think that for Vhost PMD, the Virtio completions should either be
performed by DMA engine or by a dedicated thread.
