    dts: add missing type hints to method signatures
    
    Mypy does not check functions and methods that are not entirely type
    hinted. This prevents full checks, so they have been added where missing.
    Full checks revealed some typing errors, checks were applied where
    appropriate to ensure these types were handled properly. Additionally,
    the linter raised an error "unable to assign to a method" that occurred
    within a decorator trying to manipulate the str method of a given class.
    This was changed to use the set_attr function to pass the linter. There
    was also an issue where keyboard interrupt exceptions were being sent to
    methods that expected a more specific exception. These were changed to
    accept a broader exception class as to include keyboard interrupts.
