What is the purpose of this flag?

from man gcc:

-flax-vector-conversions
  Allow implicit conversions between vectors with differing numbers of
  elements and/or incompatible element types. 
  This option should not be used for new code.
  ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
